Argel Tal and Cyrene by vulpescorax Argel Tal and Cyrene by vulpescorax
Argel Tal was a Captain of the Word Bearer Space Marine Legion. Later, he would be referred to as the Crimson Lord of the Gal Vorbak, captain of the Word Bearers' first daemon-possessed Space Marines.
His demonic half showed only in battle by twisting his armour, melting it with the flesh and rip open for sharp demonic fangs. In quiet times he seems to be pretty normal.

He and Cyrene, a blinded woman which he'd rescued from a burned world and who became Confessor of the Legion, were very close.
___
After reading "The first heretic" by the amazing Aaron Dembski-Bowden I had the image of a splitted Argel Tal in mind. Fortunately I had to travel a lot in the past weeks and in absence of watercolors I chose pencil as the medium.
Argel Tal and Cyrene and the whole Warhammer universe belong to Games Workshop.

one nitpick that i have: i'm pretty sure Tal wore Mk.IV armor instead of Mk.II or III. however, i have only read Betrayer, so i'm not sure if his plate is of a different pattern in The First Heretic.

the daemonic details are great. i also really like the colchisian cuneiform on the armor - i've always imagined colchisian writing as more arabic-like, but this depiction just works better.

Thank you very much for your comment! :thanks:

In fact I did a lot of research for Argel Tal and his armour and I found MK II, III and even IV. I chose MK III because the grille got a better design to get ripped open by a daemon inside.
In one of the first 3 HH novels, False Gods I presume, was said, that the tattoos on Erebus' head were colchosian and it looked like cuneiform script from ancient mesopotamia. I tried to give a bit of that character from what I remembered that script looked like.

it's clearly been too long since i read the first three books. somewhat embarrassing that i could forget important visual details, since those are the ones i always pay a great great deal of attention to.

I read them several times, especially Horus Rising, since I build my own army as Luna Wolves. And Loken is such a great protagonist.

Thank you very much! (thanks) In fact I did a lot of research for his armour and I found both, MK III and MKIV. Because of the grille I choose MK III, it's much better to get ripped open by a daemon inside :)

Thank you for incorporating the story behind the picture in the comment. Just adds to the feeling of it all.

Cool texturing you did, I love the duality of Argel Tal, staring down on her. Your pice shows very nicely that ugliness and beauty can be found in many forms.

Well done.

Thank you very much! I'm glad I could give a bit background to the picture without telling the whole book.
It was so much fun to draw those claws, horns and arteries and stuff - I don't think it will be the last chaos stuff I did. :)
